Alyssa Eldredge Maybe I missed this on my reading of the book, but why in the world would a king’s successor be his General rather than a baron, duke, or other nobleman? Having your military force be next in line is just asking for a military coup.
Speaking of noblemen, why AREN’T there any nobles running around? I don’t recall any lo…rds, dukes, barons, or earls at all, really.

Since the kingdom is a military kingdom I think that a military coup is moot. The way things are set up the best fighters are put in charge of the armies. The way the line of succession works here is the ruler is the King, next successor is his Son, then it is the General Absolute. There are other nobles in the Kings court. Alyssa, this is Bog Dog. It clearly states in book one, when in times of war, the highest ranking officer within the military becomes king if the king and his children are to pass on. The senate chose to vote this way after the barbarians attacked seasons ago and the kingdom of Brandor was ill prepared and unready to defend itself. This is only the rule in times of war.

So let’s say that the king and his children die and the General becomes king. Then war ends, and the general dies and he happens to have no children. What happens then?

When the General becomes king the first thing that he needs to do is fill the vacancy, that is normally the next in command, and then all other vacancy’s are fill accordingly. When Sam was second under the General, and the General was assassinated he was promoted and a new person was promoted to second. The King died of decease, his son became the … See Moreking and was assassinated at the funeral Sam became the king, the second became the General (this is automatic), and some one was promoted to fill that vacancy. The General’s family are now considered nobles. Subject to there being no war, the nobles within his family line would be considered for the crown. The senate would have some sort of vote I imagine. I will say this, the book is long enough without getting into that big mess.
